to the Acousmodules Galaxy

 

Les acousmodules constituent un ensemble de plugins qui peuvent être considérés comme système modulaire pour la création sonore multiphonique. Pensez plutôt à un système de synthèse comme Eurorack plutôt qu'à un outil de spatialisation et vous verrez que leur nombre se justifie tout à fait ;-).
Mais je conçois bien qu'il puisse être quelquefois difficile de connaître et de trouver, parmi la quantité et les dénominations ceux qui correspondent à un besoin, à un propos particulier.
Moi même...

Alors vous trouverez ci-dessous un certain nombre de questions concernant les cas de figure les plus courants avec quelques pistes de recherche, suivies d'un grand tableaux qui récapitule l'ensemble des plugins par catégorie et type de traitement. Ils sont accompagnés d'une description succinte qui devrait permettre de savoir d'un coup d'œil si l'un d'entre eux a des chances de vous convenir.

Quelques pistes pour débuter :
- le nom des plugins comporte généralement un terme qui indique à quelle famille il appartient et ce qu'il fait, par exemple "Spat" pour "spatialisation" et "Mass" parce qu'il traite plus de deux entrées simultanément, ainsi qu'un nombre qui indique dans tous les cas le nombre de canaux de sortie, par exemple "36" pour "36 canaux", éventuellement précédé d'un autre qui indique les entrées, par exemple "1664" pour "16 entrées et 64 sorties"
- la plupart des éléments graphiques peuvent être contrôlés plus finement lorsque la touche Ctrl/Command est enfoncée
- la plupart des plugins qui disposent d'une représentation symbolique de l'espace (Spat3D, SpatLayers, Focus, AnimaSpat etc.) peuvent recevoir directement des messages MIDI pour contrôler leurs paramètres principaux : LX (ou PosX) = 11, LY (ou Pos Y) = 12, LZ (ou PosZ) = 15, RX = 13, RY = 14, RZ = 16, Area Volume (ou Focus Size) = 07, Area Shape (ou Focus Shape) = 08

Acousmodules are a set of plugins that can be considered as a modular system for multiphonic sound creation. Think instead of a synthesis system like Eurorack rather than a spatialization tool and you will see that their number is perfectly justified ;-).
But I understand well that it can sometimes be difficult to know and find among their quantity and their names the ones that you need.
Myself ...

You will find below some questions about what I think are the more common cases, followed by a big chart that summarize the whole of the plugins by category and processing kind.
They are accompanied by a quick description that should allow you to know at a glance what you can do with them.
You can also download directly the related PDF documents (currently often only in French), when they are available ... 

Some ways to get started:
- the name of the plugins generally includes a term which indicates to which family it belongs and what it does, for example "Spat" for "spatialization" and "Mass" because it processes more than two entries simultaneously, as well as a number that indicates in all case the number of output channels, for example "36" for "36 channels", possibly preceded by another which indicates the inputs, for example "1664" for "16 inputs and 64 outputs"
- most graphic elements can be controlled more finely when the Ctrl / Command key is pressed
- most plugins that have a symbolic representation of the space (Spat3D, SpatLayers, Focus, AnimaSpat etc.) can directly receive MIDI messages to control their main parameters: LX (or PosX) = 11, LY (or Pos Y) = 12, LZ (or PosZ) = 15, RX = 13, RY = 14, RZ = 16, Area Volume (or Focus Size) = 07, Area Shape (or Focus Shape) = 08 
- if you use macOS, please read this note

1. SpatStruments and MiniTools series

Depuis l'été 2023 la série des SpatStruments constitue à la fois une entrée dans le monde des Acousmodules, et un ensemble de production quasi complet (avec les MiniTools) qui peut se suffire à lui-même pour tous les formats possédant jusqu'à 24 canaux. Ces plugins sont également optimisés pour mieux s'intégrer avec les dispositions standards du cinéma, et bénéficient de certaines améliorations de détail et, globalement, d'un meilleur support.
Je suppose donc que la majorité des utilisateurs potentiels des Acousmodules vont se tourner vers cette série (c'est pour ça que je l'ai faite), ce qui fait que cette page de guide, dont le but était de s'y retrouver dans la profusion de plugins, risque d'être beaucoup moins utile qu'au paravant, et c'est tant mieux!
Je vous engage donc à parcourir d'abord la page consacrée aux SpatStruments, et ensuite, si le besoin s'en fait sentir, d'aller chercher dans les autres pages les plugins et fonctions qui vous manqueraient...

Since summer 2023, the SpatStruments series constitutes both an entry into the world of Acousmodules, and an almost complete production set (with the MiniTools) which can be sufficient in itself for all formats with up to 24 canals. These plugins are also optimized to better integrate with standard cinema layouts, and benefit from some detail improvements and overall better support.
So I assume that the majority of potential users of Acousmodules will turn to this series (that's why I made it!), which means that this guide page, whose aim was to navigate the profusion of plugins, risks being much less useful than before, and that's good!
I therefore urge you to first browse the page dedicated to SpatStruments, and then, if the need arises, to look in other pages for the plugins and functions that you are missing...

 

 

2. Fast Help (2022/03)

The Fast Help docs are simple but certainly usefull descriptions of nearly every plugins parameters.
It is a work in progress and I will complete and improve them in the following months.
They must also be updated according to the plugins developments and new versions, so stay tuned!

5. Séries et familles / Series and families

"Spat" : pour "spatialisation", l'interface utilisateur est souvent basée sur une représentation spatiale symbolique. La plupart peuvent être utilisés à la manière de "panners" avec des réglages appropriés, mais ils sont plutôt à considérer comme des "pinceaux" à tailles variables.

"Spat": for "spatialization", the user interface is often based on a symbolic spatial representation. Most of them can be used in the manner of "panners" with appropriated settings, but they are rather to be considered as variable size "brushes".

"Layers" : la dimension verticale du dispositif haut-parlant est organisée en couches, jusqu'à 6. Cette conception permet d'optimiser les mouvements d'élévation et de faciliter l'étendue horizontale des masses spatiales.

"Layers": the vertical dimension of the loudspeaker device is organized in layers, up to 6. This design optimizes elevation movements and facilitate horizontal expanse of masses space.

"Mass" : ils traitent des sources multiphoniques, généralement jusqu'à 8 ou 16 canaux, qui sont organisées spatialement selon des formes pré-établies (cube, cercle, ligne, grille...), qui sont librement modifiées et combinées.

"Mass": they deal with multiphonic sources, generally up to 8 or 16 channels, which are spatially organized into shapes pre-established (cube, circle, line, grid ...), which are freely modified and combined.

"Scale" : variantes de la série "Mass" dans lesquelles les canaux d'entrée ne sont pas groupés selon des formes prédéfinies mais selon une disposition libre. Les possibilités de transformations sont par contre limitées à la position et à l'extension/contraction du groupe (indépendemment dans les trois dimensions).

"Scale": variants of the "Mass" series in which the input channels are not grouped by shapes but according to a free manual arrangement. The possibilities of transformation are limited to the position and extension / contraction of the group (free in all three dimensions).

"Sweet" : ils sont dédiés aux espaces circulaires, sphériques et cylindriques, mono ou multicouches, et comme ils traitent le signal à puissance constante ils peuvent être plus faciles à utiliser pour des tâches simples comme des panners.

"Sweet": they are dedicated to circular, spherical and cylindrical spaces, single or multi-layered, and since they process the signal at constant power they may be easier to use for simple tasks like panners.

"Focus" : ils peuvent traiter l'ensemble des canaux d'un dispositif spatial ou des sons multiphoniques complexes en appliquant leur effet sur une zone sphérique de position et de taille variable, pouvant aller d'un point unique à l'ensemble des canaux. Ils permettent de combiner des traitements multicanaux massifs avec un contrôle simple (le "focus") et donc d'obtenir des effets complexes qui restent intuitifs à utiliser. Ils sont déclinés principalement sous la forme d'effets : filtre, délai, réverbération, modulateur en anneau, granulateur, pitch shifter, vocoder.
Ils ont également la possibilité de traiter n'importe quelles sources de 1 jusqu'à 64 canaux, les regroupements étant effectués automatiquement sur les canaux disponibles.

"Focus": they can process all the channels of a spatial system or a complex multiphonic sound by applying their effect to a spherical zone of position and variable size, ranging from a single point to all the available channels.
They make it possible to combine massive multichannel treatments with a simple control (the "focus") and thus obtain complex effects which remain intuitive to use. They are mainly available in the form of effects: filter, delay, reverb, ring modulator, granulator, pitch shifter, vocoder.
They also have the option to process any source from 1 up to 64 channels, groupings being done automatically on the available channels.

"Anima" : ils disposent de modulateurs

 

"Kaleido" :

 

"Uni" : traitements parallèles où tous les canaux partagent les mêmes valeurs. Ils disposent généralement d'un nombre réduit de paramètres. Sauf exception, ils peuvent être utilisés pour traiter un flux ambisonique jusqu'à l'ordre 7.

"Uni": parallel processing where all the channels share the same values. They generally have a reduced number of parameters. With some exceptions, they can be used to treat an ambisonic flow up to order 7.

"Multi" : traitements multicanaux où chaque canal peut avoir des valeurs différentes, réglables séparément.

"Multi": multi-channel processing where each channel can have a different value, adjustable separately.

"Spaced" : traitements multicanaux où chaque canal peut avoir des valeurs différentes, les réglages pouvant être aidés par une représentation (facultative et libre) de leur position dans l'espace. Sauf exception, ces valeurs ne sont pas destinées à être automatisées.

"Spaced": multi-channel processing where each channel can have values different, the settings being aided by a representation of their position in space.

"Scatter" : traitements parallèles où chaque canal peut avoir des valeurs différentes, réglables globalement et pouvant être animées. Ils traitent tous 64 canaux en interne pouvant être répartis dynamiquement de 1 à 64 entrées / sorties.

"Scatter": parallel processing where each channel can have values different, globally adjustable and can be animated. They deal all 64 internal channels that can be dynamically distributed from 1 to 64 inputs / outputs.

"Zone" : traitements parallèles où chaque canal peut avoir des valeurs différentes selon sa représentation spatiale en X, Y ou Z. Peut s'appliquer à l'ensemble du dispositif spatial ou à un format d'objet particulier.

"Zone": parallel processing where each channel can have values different according to its spatial representation in X, Y or Z. 

"Spectra" : ils appliquent un traitement spatial à différentes bandes de fréquences

 

 

 

6. Les fichiers de configuration spatiale / Spatial configuration files

Un système d'exportation/importation de fichiers de configuration spatiale a été mis en place début 2022 pour les plugins qui sont basés sur une représentation symbolique de la disposition des points haut-parlants (soit à peu près la moitié des Acousmodules). Ces fichiers permettent l'échange de ces configurations de base indépendamment des réglages des Presets propres à chacun.
Attention : ils ne comprennent que les positions spatiales et l'activation des points, les réglages d'aires et de couleurs sont bien-sûr à régler à chaque fois en fonction des spécificités des plugins et de leurs applications. 
Étant de simples fichiers textes ils peuvent être également édités séparément ou avec le plugin SpaceEditor (voir la colonne "import export" dans le tableau suivant pour savoir quels sont les plugins qui peuvent en bénéficier).

A spatial configuration file backup system has been implemented in early 2022 and it is currently being rolled out to plugins concerned, namely most of those which are based on a representation symbolic of the layout of the loudspeaker points (about half Acousmodules). These files allow the exchange of these basic configurations independently of the settings of the Presets specific to each plugin.
They only comprise the spatial positions and the activation of the points, the area and color settings must be configured each time according to the plugins and their applications.
Being simple text files they can also be edited separately or with the
SpaceEditor (see the column "layouts" in the following table to find out which plugins can benefit).

7. T h e   L I S T

Spatialization (spatial mass processing)

Reminder: these plugins process only the amplitudes and don't transform the sound in any other ways. They are intended to work with real loudspeakers spaces and don't use spatial compression or virtualization (but they can easily be converted to ambisonics and binaural with third party free tools).
- space type: "multi" = independant of the loudspeakers arrangement ; "mesh" = 2D and 3D meshed spaces ; "peri" = periphonic only like domes and cinema formats ; (x) means that it is not optimal in this mode.
- import export: the output spatial arrangement in most of the "3D" and Layers plugins can be saved and shared by other plugins with the same number of outputs, typically 18, 36 and 64
- "universal VST3" for both Windows and MacOS will replace progressively the current VST3 and AU versions

8. Les contrôleurs gestuels / Gesture controllers

La plupart des Acousmodules sont conçus pour être utilisés en temps réel avec des contrôleurs gestuels. C'est notamment le cas pour ceux qui

 

MPESynth, MPESampler, MPESpat : these plugins need to move several fingers at once while adjusting the pressure, they are the more demanding qualities from the controllers and ideally need a flat continuous surface to operate.
The suitable controllers are, from the cheapest to the more expensive : Lightpad Block, Sensel Morph, Erae Touch and Haken Continuum.
Others can do with some effort and important limits : Joué, Seaboard Block and Rise, Linnstrument.
The Lightpad suffer from its small size and above all its very low sensitivity (even the second improved version), making 2D movements combined with pressure challenging and with a poor result.
The Erae Touch uses the same pressure cells technique but in a considerable wider range, but also with more distance between them resulting in more interpolation computing, which is currently not optimal. The pressure sensitivity is globally good and its dynamic range correct, but alas these are not even accross the cells resulting in great variations. The result is while it is a very nice controller, using it to obtain reliable XYZ gestures is actually not possible.
The Continuum must be a good one, but since it is a synthesizer and its price is far above
The Sensel Morph is actually the only MPE controller that allows to put the fingers freely on the surface and who has an excellent spatial accuracy and time response. Alas, it is no more available ...
The Joué with the Scaler pad (which is the only one that allows a full MPE control) while disposing of the necessary features, is disapointing in every domains : its hardware has a low definition, sensitivity and sampling rate, and its software does not provide enough settings to get around these limits.

SpatTouch, TouchFilter, TouchSampler : these plugins mostly use only polyphonic pressure, so if a high sensitivity and a wide range is best more controllers will fit. On the other hand, the spatial organization of the touches may be very important relative to the space they are connected to.
Worlde Orca Pad : it is a low cost 64 buttons grid controller which support Polyphonic Aftertouch with average results
