Contrary to all the other plugins, these ones DON'T process audio signal but only controls, generaly MIDI datas.

The "simple controllers", associate a graphical object to a unique parameter. They can be considered like virtual control surfaces. Their main interest is to group in a single interface all the controls you need, and to be able to change the values one by one.

The "grouped controllers" are more original. Their principle : a single gesture can control simultaneously a lot of different parameters that become linked together in a complex manner. They are especially adapted with audio processing plugins, or with several instances of a spatialization one (see tutoriel 12).

The plugins that automatically generate variations allow to do complex parameters evolutions, and thes processors and MIDI converters can adapt the controls to special peripherics or simply reansform the MIDI datas.

See also the excellent MIDI plugins from NicFit , SOMA, Toby Bear and Piz.

Compatible Hosts : Aodix, Bidule, Cantabile, Console, Cubase, EnergyXT, MaizeStudio, Max/Msp, MiniHost, Nuendo, PureData, Reaper, SaviHost, Synthedit, Tracktion, Usine, VSTHost

Some plugins don't have at all any MIDI output, and their values are only available as VST parameters. The advantage ? For the hosts that support this direct parameters access it avoid the MIDI conversions and makes the settings faster.

Compatible hosts : Bidule, Max/Msp, PureData, Usine

Plugins and MIDI Controllers

Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Tracktion & FLStudio

Unless I'm mistaken, these are the only multitrack softwares to be support the MIDI ouput of VST plugins.
Please refer to the Tutorial 8 for their use in Cubase and Nuendo, and for Tracktion to the modular routing below

Multitracks that DO NOT support MIDI out VST plugins

= all the others....
You will need an external VST host and a MIDI Router, for example SAVIHost from Hermann Seib, and MIDIYoke.
See the Tutorial 9 for the connections and use.

Modular softwares

EnergyXT, Bidule, Console, Synthedit, MaizeStudio, Max/Msp, PureData, Usine and the Rack Filters of Tracktion.
Like for audio connections, there is no constraint for the MIDI ones.
For example, in Console :

Thee MultiJoy controls two SpatSurrounds.

For the hosts that support direct VST parameters connections (Bidule, Max/Msp, PureData, Usine), they are generally made in the same manner than the audio connections (here in Usine) :

or, in the case of Bidule, in the "Parameters" window (less pratical).

Génération de contrôleurs comnbinés complexes :

- sixteen MIDI controllers outputs
- MIDI datas generation according to the 2D proximity between objects
- proximity setting for each controller with indication of the corresponding intensity
- ten intensity curves
- an audio input can be used as a modulation source
Two animation sections that can be used and combined together :
Steps Section :
- 2D paths with sixteen points
- smoothing parameter to obtain continuous trajectories
- four playing modes : linear / step / time / cycle
- "linear" mode : manual moving along the path with the mouse or a MIDI controller, modulation according to the intensity of the input sound
- "step" mode : point to point moving triggered by the input sound, the hosts's tempo or manually (tap tempo), start and end points and direction settings
- "time" mode : duration from 1 to 30 seconds, acceleration curves, start point and length
- 2D pad to distort the path (scales and mirrors)
- global 2D shifting
Curves Section :
- two modulateurs with multiples waveforms control the X / Y movements
- 2D pads to control the speed and the amplitude of the movement separate for each axis
- phase and acceleration settings
- global modulator
- sub-modulator that controls the speed and the amplitude of the global modulator to make evolving curves
- the speed can be locked to the tempo (host, thresholds of the audio input, tap tempo)
Instant Gestures Section :
Temporary mode that overides the two animation sections. It is independant from the patch changes and the settings are memorized unless the plugin is deactivated.
- Bounces mode : you have to launch the little ring with the mouse and let him bounce on the edges of the 2D space, power and friction settings (non linear at high values), it can also be randomly triggered by the audio input.
- Scratchpad mode : realtime recording of a 2D path up to 30 secondes, variable speed and direction replay, realtime control of the loop points, global distortion of the path (scales and mirrors).
Global :
- can use the host tempo as a modulation source
- automatic detection of the audio input's tempo
- tap tempo function
- subdivision from whole note to six-fourth note, support of tuplets
- you can play with up to 64 patches without any interruption with the mouse or a MIDI keyboard
- "NotesOFF default" option : define a default setting when no key is played.

This plugin allows at the same time to visualize the eight controls which are send from a P5 Glove (X, Y, Z position and the bend of the five fingers) and to modify the values. It must receive the MIDI datas that are sent through a MIDI Router by the P5GloveMIDI from Ross Bencina (in absolute coordinates).
It can process the datas in the following manners :
- change the controller type
- scaling of the curve
- invert the direction
- shift
- transformation of the curves by simple mathematicals functions or a graphical transfert function
- lower and upper limit
- inertia, to smooth the irregularities of the P5 or create very smooth movements
- the thumb can trig a note from a threshold
Applications : can be used with a spatialization plugin like the Spat3D16 or with instruments like the SpatSampler.
