Nodal-Cubic in "advanced" versions

Everything that is presented on the
Nodal Audio Space page applies both for surface and for volumetric matrix spaces.

Nodal-61 format can indeed be considered as partial space (surface / 2D only) but it is perfectly adapted to 99.99% (estimation!) of current world speakers devices.
But in our electroacoustic and acousmatic micro world, the 0.01 lasting percent may have a comparatively bigger importance because "the matter of spatial sound matters". Thus we can hope that full volumetric nodal audio and speaker spaces will be more widespread in the coming years...

For this, Nodal-3D matrix formats will provide a simple yet powerful way to produce and to deliver works whith good balance between spatial possibilities for creation and real world speaker devices for today and tomorrow.

It is already possible to produce N-64C space with most Open Channels and Direct Channels Acousmodules, and a number of special versions can process N-125 spaces, totally or partially (N-75, N-100).

On the technical side, N-64C can use the same third party tools and similar workflow as N-61, so you can refer to the N-61/Regular page and documents.

On the other hand, Nodal-125C matrix channels may be considered as a hugely oversized format compared to most available speaker spaces around the world. But if we refer to the number of channels, Dolby Atmos ADM can be 128 and 10th order ambisonics is 121, so it is not so much for a format that covers a full true 3D space instead of a partial envelope...*
Of course there is currently very few 3rd party applications and plugins that can process more than 64 channels, which means that you are more or less forced to use the Acousmodules ;-). But among the multitrack hosts there is still Reaper, so we're not going to complain either...

Given the very small number of systems and venues that offer true three-dimensional spaces, using the N-128 format is certainly of limited practical use at present. Nevertheless, it can improve certain spatial audio processing techniques, even in smaller spaces, by performing a kind of spatial upsampling. This approach will be presented later.

Unlike the plugins of the Regular series, Open Channels versions can use any spatial layout, thus you will need to define them by yourself, or better import already done configuration files and Presets (see below for their use).

Like N-61, Nodal-Cubic formats can also be rendered to 3D envelope only spaces, but can create better internal phantom space.

N-64 compatible plugins

Almost all the Advanced Acousmodules can process Nodal-64 Cubic spaces, so just go to the pages and download the bundles or the plugins you want...
To use them, import the
am64, am3l or am3d configuration file according to the plugin and play with them: since the spatial mesh is perfectly equidistant, no spatial setting is needed, so you can ignore the outputs area settings and use them as simply as N-61 versions ;-)

1. insert a 64 Open Channels Acousmodule on a 64 channels track in Reaper

2. click on "Import" and select the "Nodal-64-Cube" file

3. you have now a perfect Nodal Matrix 64C plugin to play with ;-)

4. listen or export to any nodal space with the free GRM SpaceMaster (up to 64 channels)
and to binaural with the SpaceVR

About ambisonics
This kind of coding doesn't support real 3D spaces – only hollow spheres –, but if you need to deliver a work through this format, you can:
- first convert the 64 channels cubic mesh into a 52 or 56 channels cubic surface with the SpaceMaster plugin (remove the 12 – dome – or 8 – sphere – endophonic nodes)
- then apply a high-order ambisonic encoding with IEM or Sparta plugins.
Internal space nodes and the corresponding sounds' mass will be "transformed" to space ghosts, which of course will not retain their qualities, but this may produce an improved immersion compared to conventional dome productions.

N-75

If N-125C can represent a kind of ideal format for production and delivery of true 3D spaces, there is still a number of Acousmodules which do not support this number of channels, and anyway, you don't always need to process the whole space at once.
It is one of the advantages of the layers spatial organization: each layer is a 5 x 5 matrix, so you can easily combine one or more of them inside the whole five layers final space.
In most cases, three layers (N-75) or four (N-100), or even two (N-50), may be enough to create and process sounds, all you will need is the special HeightShifter N-125 plugin to organize and distribute them among the five N-125 layers.

Compatible N-75 versions can be downloaded separately on the Advanced pages, but they are also available through the bundle below.
To use them, you can import an am64 or
am3d N-75 configuration file, or load the RPL file (Reaper Library) which may be provided.
Attention: most plugins can import only the first 64 channels coordinates, thus you will have to place the 11 latest ones manually... I will try to improve this later.

Plugins contained in the archive
As you can see, if it still lacks some tools like FFT based FX, most spatialization, effects and sampling/synthesis instruments are already available. The FastHelp documents that can be downloaded on the pages describe the 64 channels versions, but otherwise their features must be about the same.

The asterix indicates the plugins which are currently available for Mac.

N-125 compatible and special versions

128 Channels Acousmodules currectly don't use a dedicated spatial configuration file format, thus the N-125 spatial layout (and the N-100) in these plugins is divided into two parts, which must be imported in the two sections (A and B) of the plugins: N-125Low.am64 (1 to 64) and N-125High.am64 (65 to 100/125).

The following plugins are available for Windows on the Advanced pages: contact me if you want Mac versions...
A N-125 bundle will be provided later together with the special versions.

Special N-125 versions:

SpaceTest N-125

For easy operation, the five layers are represented side by side, but this version of the Test family has the same features as the others: generate a test signal (Pink White noise, Sine, Triangle, Saw and Square) channel by channel, or as a sequence where you choose the start point and the range.
The signal can also be a variable rate iteration instead continuous, making a kind of basic multichannel synthesis tool...

HeightShifter N-125

Shift independantly the five height layers from input to outputs.
It can be used as a global space processor together with the SpaceRotator and the SpaceScaler, but also as a general converter from/to partial N-125 as N-100, N-75 and N-50.

SpaceRotator N-125

SpaceScaler N-125

VisualConverter 80-125

Distribute or upscale any spatial nodal format to N-125.
The plugin is not very optimized, both for the UI and the engine, so it is mostly convenient for not realtime conversions of fixed works.

Attention: currently, the only tool adapted to render N-125 Cubic format to any speaker device is the TransSpace 128. Since it is a semi-automatic tool, it needs some knowledge and some time to operate. More to come about it...

A special case: N-50 for hollow sphere spaces?

In the same way as N-61 is a surface which can be either flat or curved, we can use two N-25 layers to produce two half spheres. The result can be used to obtain high density nodal envelope for binauralisation, or other kinds of experimental productions like centrifugal compact spheres (IKO, Perun...).

Characteristics:
- 6 output layers: 1 / 8 / 16 / 16 / 8 / 1
- 2 processing layers: easy to manage
- allows spatial masses and "spatial shortcuts" not possible with polar techniques
- compatible with every acousmodules
- high nodal resolution more precise than HOA7
